Bicycling is under attack in Wisconsin.
We just became the first state in the nation to repeal a Complete Streets law and state funding for trail building was cut by a third.
Once ranked as high as the second friendliest state for cycling in the nation, the League of American Bicyclists moved us down to ninth this year and we cringe at what’s coming for 2016.
Yet, we’ve had some victories. With help from members like you, we beat the bike tax and helped stop a major cut to trail funding proposed by the governor. Thanks to a mobilized bike community we were able to make improvements on terrible proposals.
But we have to change this dynamic. Right now we’re fighting just to keep some of what we’ve had. We need to stem the losses and start making progress again.
That’s where you come in, because you can make a difference for Wisconsin bicycling today by contributing to the Bike Fed’s Gear Up initiative. Gear Up is our plan to double down on our work with local communities, to make progress there, and then to “gear up,” using local officials and community leaders to carry the pro bike message to their state legislators and representatives in Congress.
As a cyclist, I’ll bet you know every pothole, every street that would benefit from a bike lane, and every dangerous intersection that could be made safer with some simple treatments. And all those problems get fixed at the local level.
With your additional gift today, Gear Up will allow us to create a first-of-its-kind Advocacy Academy, to give cyclists like you the training and tools they need to bring better bicycling to their communities. From there, we’ll be able to get city officials and local advocacy groups on board. We can build a powerful, statewide network of bike clubs, organizations, and partners in planning, public health, and economic development.
Then with that powerful local energy in place, we can win big for bikes in the legislative arena — with local, grassroots support.
It’s time to start making progress again, and that starts at home and it starts with your support right now. With cycling under a greater threat — and yet with more potential — than ever, now’s the time to make our voice stronger.
Please help us build a stronger local, grassroots cycling movement. You’ll see the benefits in the very streets you ride and, eventually, in your state government as well.
P.S Don’t delay. Make your gift today and it will be doubled by Bike Fed board member, Ted Galloway. Make a contribution of $70 or more and we’ll send you this limited-edition, red, “Bike Local” bumper sticker as a thank-you for your support.
