Hello Workplace Coordinators!

As workplace coordinator your job is to get the word out that Bike to Work Week is May 9th - 16th. Every person, whether a regular all weather commuter; nice weather rider or trying it out because the price of gas is going throught the roof, must be registered at bfw.org to count in the challenge.

Registration online also gives you entry to the Final Fiesta brought to you by Planet Bike. Great raffle prizes for you to try to win, food and beverage and a final chance to get your bike checked. This year's band is the German Art Students.

Work Place Challenge to continue... We'll be determining the effort index for each employer using a secret formula involving square roots. It relates number of one way trips to total number of employees. Only four days of trips will be counted. As Work Place Coordinator you are responsible to send me that data by noon on Thursday May 15th. I'll need to know that you intend to participate as a workplace so I'm able to match you with your report on Thursday, so send me an email asap at nancy@bfw.org.

We've got actual posters here on the stairs outside our 4th floor door that can be picked up at your convenience. This year we're promoting Madison Commuter of the Year with the Isthmus and Erik's Bike Shop. Information about that contest: www.thedailypage.com/commute

Each Work Place Coordinator will receive a gift from the Bicycle Federation in recognition of your efforts.

Please feel free to send this information along to other bicycling enthusiasts throughout the city!

If you've already registered, thanks!

What does it take to become a Worksite Coordinator?

Worksite coordinators are central for the success of the Bike to Work Week idea: Spread the word about the fun of bicycle commuting, and assist new commuters with their first steps. You know as well as we do, once your co-workers discover bicycle commuting, they will be hooked, and you will have helped to change their life for ever. It's just that one first step...

Below we describe how you as a worksite coordinator can help with that one first step, and how Bike to Work Week will assist you with your task.

What you could do: How we will help you:

Publicize Bike to Work Week at your Worksite

We will provide...
  • Hang fliers and posters
  • Run articles in your company newsletter or company-wide e-mail
  • Fliers, posters, brochures and sample articles!
Educate and prepare workmates for bicycle commuting We will provide...
  • Schedule lunchtime workshops and seminars on bicycling
  • Set up on-site bike tune-ups
  • Offer route planning assistance
  • Set up a bike buddy program
  • Schedule an Effective Cycling class
  • Outlines and materials for three easy-to-lead workshops.
  • Copies of a bicycle commuting video are available for you to show and discuss.
  • The Bike to Work Committee can also help with maps, course scheduling, and provide a list of bike shops actively involved in Bike to Work Week, so your off-site resources are already at hand!
Register workmates for Bike to Work Week We will provide...
Decide when and where you will register people for Bike to Work Week. At your desk or a table in the lobby from 7-9am, Monday through Friday? This depends on your hours and type of business. Don't forget to put this info on your fliers and other promotional items! Online pre-registration, so co-workers who wish to make an advance commitment to participate may do so. In May, you'll be able to pick up Bike to Work Posters and commuting information. Your coworkers' registrations put your company in the running for prizes in the Worksite Challenge Competition!

Note: Starting in 2004, Bike Fed will no longer be registering Worksite Coordinators. We still encourage individuals to promote bike commuting at their places of work, however. Please feel free to stop by the Bike Fed office and pick up information to help you promote bike commuting.
