Light up the Night Ride in La Crosse

Students gather for bike lights

As the daylight hours become shorter, a group of local optimists used the opportunity to educate college students about the importance of riding with lights.  The committee included the Bike Fed, the Driftless Region Bicycle Coalition (DRBC), and staff from both UW La Crosse and Western Technical College.

The DRBC contributed free sets of bike lights to the first twenty-five participants, the Bike Fed provided an informal class on the rules of the road and the importance of riding with lights, and all hands were on deck to help install lights.

The event culminated with a ride in the dark through downtown La Crosse with a stop  at the Root Note Coffee Shop.  Despite the gloomy weather, the event was successful and all event planners look forward to a repeat performance.

Riding with lights is such an important thing to do from a safety and legal standpoint, but because 99% of bikes don’t come standard with lights, many people ride ninja style through the darkness. If you are interested in putting together a similar event and helping people in your community “get lit up,” contact us at the Bike Fed for assistance.  We can help with safety materials and suggest ways to get discounts on lights to distribute.
